The Refraction of lights is a physics software, which facilitates to solve physics problems related to refraction of rays when they move from one medium to another. It also gives the critical angle for that combination of mediums, which signifies the total internal reflection.

• Open Genius Maker software and click "Refraction of rays" button. It opens the Refraction of light rays window as shown above.
• On opening you will see that 2 mediums, namely, air and water are selected by default.
• As you move the mouse a torch moves along with your mouse always pointing its beam to the centre of the graphics area. You may notice that the direction of the ray changes, whenever the ray moves from one medium to another. The current angle of incident ray, refracted ray and reflected ray are displayed for every position the torch moves.
• You may also see, how a total internal reflection takes place just by moving the mouse to areas where its incident angle is greater than the critical angle.
• Just click at any place in the graphics area to anchor the torch at that place. Click again to remove the anchor.

EXAMPLE - 1

• Find out the critical angle of refraction for light entering from a special glass of refractive index 1.8 to air.
• From "Medium 1" box, select the medium as "Air"

• The software automatically sets the value of refractive index as 1.0003

• From "Medium 2" box, select the medium as "(custom)"

• Enter the value of refractive index as 1.8 in the Medium 2 box.

• You may note the value of critical angle from the note below the graphics area. In this case it displays the critical angle as 33.76o

• Now you can move the mouse over medium 2 to see how the light ray reflects and refracts.

• Move the mouse in such a way that you are crossing the critical angle, then you will be able to witness how Total internal reflection takes place.

EXAMPLE - 2

• Find out the angle of refraction of light, which is entering at an angle of 20o to the normal of a glass of refractive index 1.9 to a chemical solution of refractive index 3.1
• Ensure that the free movement of torch is locked. If not, Lock the free movement by clicking "Lock free movement" button in the torch position control window.

Simply click on the graphics area to lock it.

• From "Medium 1" box, select the medium as "(custom)"

• Enter the value of refractive index as 1.9 in the Medium 1 box.

• From "Medium 2" box, select the medium as "(custom)"

• Enter the value of refractive index as 3.1 in the Medium 2 box.

• Enter the angle of incident ray as 20o in the torch position control window. Also select medium 1. (This is provided to specify the location of torch as either medium 1 or medium 2)

• Now you can see that the torch gets positioned at the set location and mediums are also set as per the current problem.

• Now you can observe from the graphics area that the refracted ray is at an angle of 12.1o

• Hence the answer to the question is 12.1o

• Now Just click the "Print" button on top. Set the printing option and click print. You will get a printout of the solution.

• Print : If you want to take a printout of the set problem, it is easy. Just click the "Print" button on top. It opens the Printer dialog. Select options for printer, paper orientation and number of copies etc and then click print.

• Save : If you want to save the graphics as an image, you can do so by clicking the "Save" button on top. It opens the Save dialog. Select a suitable location and name for the file and then click "Save".
